RECENDT develops optical and acoustic technologies for non-destructive characterization of mate- rials in terms of chemical and physical/structural properties and for process-integrated testing and inline analysis. The acquired data is processed with cutting-edge data analysis methods and pro- vided to the process-owners as usable and valuable information. With an interdisciplinary team and state-of-the-art photonic technologies, RECENDT thus covers the entire field of intelligent sensor technology. To actively strengthen our team, we are looking for a

Master student (m/f/d) Linz, Austria / 30 hours per week

As a Master student, you will become part of the binational research project LUCA (Laser Ultrasonics for Cybersecurity Analysis), a collaboration between RECENDT and three leading French research groups.

Modern electronic devices can be vulnerable to physical attacks that exploit their underlying hardware. Understanding such vulnerabilities requires experimental techniques capable of probing and manipulating increasingly complex electronic systems at micro- and nanoscale dimensions. The LUCA project explores laser-generated high-frequency ultrasound as a novel experimental ap- proach for investigating electronic devices and their elementary constituents, such as individual transistors. The project combines ultrafast laser technology, GHz acoustics and semiconductor device physics to study the generation, interaction and detection of high-frequency elastic waves in functional electronic structures.

A central objective is to advance the fundamental understanding of the physical mechanisms governing ultrafast acoustic phenomena in these devices and to explore how these effects can be used for the analysis and manipulation of electronic hardware. In the longer term, this approach may enable novel methods for hardware security, including the investigation of physical vulnerabilities and attack mechanisms.

Your role will involve the experimental implementation of these concepts, with a particular focus on improving and optimizing a laser-ultrasonic system for ultrafast acoustics on sub- nanosecond timescales. You will work with lasers, optical and electronic measurement techniques, perform experiments on electronic devices, and analyse the resulting data. The position therefore offers the opportunity to work at the intersection of experimental physics, photonics, ultrafast acous- tics and semiconductor technology, with an application perspective in hardware security.
